Markert Family Blog: Race Day!

Well, I did it! Slowly, I must admit...but I crossed that finish line. My Mom, who probably could have finished more quickly, stayed with me and encouraged me the whole time and we crossed the line together (along with my boys who ran the last part of the race with me). We had a gorgeous day in Newburyport today (oh, how I wish we could live there!). The Moore's and Boisvert's joined us at Bresnahan Elementary School to join in on the kids fun and then send me off. We registered all the kiddos for the Fun Run at 12:00...pre-k and 1st grade ran together, then the big kids (2nd - 5th grade) ran. They all did an amazing job! I have to say that the course for the older kids was pretty challenging! It reminded me of cross-country in high school...ugh! Flannery and Noah did a great job...

We runners started off at 1:00 and ran all along the waterfront. My Mom stayed with me and my Dad ran ahead (seeing that he bikes 60 miles each weekend, it was a breeze for him!). Since my training here at home was hindered due to sickness, I was a little behind where I should have been for this race. I jogged some and walked some. The course was very level, except for one gradual hill at the end, and the scenery was just gorgeous. What else would you expect in Newburyport? One other thing that kept me going (strangely enough) was the sweet, glorious scent of lilac which everyone seems to have lining their yards. It wasn't a strong smell like it would be if they were in the house in a vase, but a gentle smell. Anyway, enough about the surroundings! I had the absolute BEST cheering crew at the finish line...Christie, Jen, and all the families, it really made me smile and feel so incredibly loved! It was a good first race for me, and I look forward to training more this year. Christie, Jen, my Mom and I have made a pact that we're all going to run this race together next year! I can't wait!!!

After the race, we met up with my parents and the Boisvert's downtown and walked around a bit. The boys visited their favorite candy store and I had my Starbucks. Mmmmmmm......great ending to a perfect day!
